Jhon Browns raid on a federal armory was an attempt to get weapons and ammo for the slaves in the south to revolt. The raid was attempted by 21 men and was defeated by a platoon of U.S marines led by Robert Lee. The trial and hanging of Jhon Brown was the reference in the blue and the gray.

Vicksburg

A union siege taking place from May 18 to July 4. A group of maneuvers formed by Ulysses S Grant that forced the confederate army of Mississippi back to the defensive lines around the fortress city of Vicksburg. Jhon met his brother and he snuck in to Vicksburg to see his sister and give her food.

The 7 days battles were fought outside of Richmond from June 25-July 1 1862. it was a series of 6 battles or skirmishes where R. Lee pushed the army of the Potomac back and into a retreat down the Virginian peninsula. In the movie it was where the balloons were.
